UPDATE: Attorney General Gerretsen to retire from politics
Ontario's Attorney General says he's retiring from politics.
John Gerretsen announced he will not seek re-election whenever the next vote is called.
MPP for Kingston and the Islands made the announcement in his constituency office on Friday.
Gerretsen tells Newstalk 1010 this has nothing to do with Kathleen Wynne, who he says he holds in high regard.
He says he has been considering this for over six months, underlining that after 40 years in politics it was time.
Before being chosen as Attorney General, Gerretsen has also been Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister, Minister responsible for Seniors Issues, Environment Minister, and Minister of Consumer Services.
Gerretsen was first elected as MPP in 1995.
Before his foray into provincial politics, Gerretsen was Kingston Mayor and sat on council.
