And we're lucky that many of the great personalities who were so much a part of the daily lives of people who continue to listen today...are still with us. Over the years I have been lucky enough to spend some time with Andy Barrie whose career I have emulated in a small way by starting out at CJAD in Montreal and then coming down the 401 to CFRB. In a business of great voices, Andy's is a special one. I don't even know what it is that makes it seem like he's pouring right out of the speakers when he's on the air.
Andy moved on to the CBC where he retired in 2010 after deciding that his Parkinson’s had reached a point where he could no longer do his job to his satisfaction. Last week he stopped by ...

How to find the stuff we talked about

I know a lot of you are on the go in the morning so there are a lot of things we talk about that you would like to make a note of but you just don't have a chance. So here are some links to help you track some of this stuff down.
The thriller writer I talked about is Linwood Barclay. He has a great catalogue that you could spend the summer on without regrets.
You can find the sad cat diary here. It's a hilarious three minutes you'll want to share.
On Wednesday we ran a few segments from a Ted Talk presented by school teacher Rita Pierson. Wow. If only every teacher was like this.
On holiday Monday we're going to have some great interviews: Sissy Spacek, Andy Barrie, A Boston bombing victim talks about her recovery and tells us what she thinks about the guys who ...

Radio gets results

What a great week it's been for us at NewsTalk 1010. I like to say "this is where the real conversation is happening" but this week there was more than conversation. Wednesday morning we picked up from where John Tory had left off the afternoon before talking about the Mary Shadd playground that was burned to the ground by some yahoos earlier in the week. The playground was built through hard earned money in a community where they don't have much. They raised the cash almost a buck at a time and when they felt they had pretty well drained the well they went ahead with what they had; twenty thousand dollars". And just months after they opened the playground, someone burned it down.
By the end of the show Tom Mahalik had offered $1800 (always his magic number) and businessman Manuel DaCosta had stepped forward to offer to ...

Talking Points Memo

You wouldn't know it from this morning's show but Michael Coren and I are good friends. And much like Kathleen Wynne we didn't apologize to each other, we expressed regret. Our relationship is such that we can get into a pretty fierce exchange without trying to kill each other.
For those who weren't listening, Michael, Jim Richards (who was very sporting about the whole thing) and I were engaged in a discussion about the provincial government's gas plant fiasco when Michael noted that if Mike Harris had done the same thing there would have been a huge uproar (which ignores the fact that there IS a huge uproar). As an illustration he made mention of the famous Walkerton tainted water crisis. Now I have had many an exchange with both pundits and callers where Walkerton comes up as an example of how a government was unfairly made to wear a ...

A new Canadian thanks a soldier

For several years I've been trading e-mails with Greg Woolvett, proud and often distressed father of a Canadian soldier who served in Afghanistan. Master Corporal Jon Woolvett has had a tough time returning to Canada from the battle field. He has suffered from PTSD a condition that has plunged him into addiction, depression, sleeplessness and periods where he withdraws completely from his family and society.
Greg has been a tireless advocate for his son fighting the armed forces establishment and a government that has at many turns simply told Jon that he should just buck up and get on with his life. With a few notable exceptions he has been abused by the very people he signed up to serve. At one point Greg actually kidnapped his own son to get him into the treatment he needed.
Lately things have been looking up for him so it was a ...

Every dog gets his day

In the midst of a week of violence, fear and carnage, maybe you could use a lift. So here are a couple of videos for you.
The Mirvish stage production of The Wizard of Oz cast a trio of dogs (everybody needs an understudy) as Toto. As it turns out the dogs are the same breed as my guy Zack. So we hatched the idea of getting Zack to stand in for a show. We shot it from a number of angles. Here's an edit by our interwebs man Andrew Dunlop and here is the version produced from the same footage by the guys at Mirvish.
Now before someone flies off the handle about people who think their dogs are human I am very much aware of the fact that Zack is a fifteen pound terrier for whom the stage holds little appeal save for the snacks he ...

Odds are against the casino

The mayor's executive committee voted 9-4 today in favour of a casino mega complex and that may be the only yes votes the mayor has. At latest count more than half of the full council has already announced they will vote no.
It's worth noting that it's not just council's left that opposes the project, the real mix of votes is on the no side. So this narrative about snobby know-it-all scolds trying to tell Toronto what's good for them doesn't really hold up. If anyone is trying to lecture this city about what’s good for it, it’s the pro-casino crowd. What's with all the name calling insisting that anyone who wont go along with the project is some kind of obsctructionist jerk? Sue-Ann Levy exceeded her usual hectoring haranguing this morning:
"A tag team of Leftist Snobs/Arrogant Know-it-Alls/Obstructionists/Kindegarten Kiddies on council -- Adam Vaughan, Gord Perks, Joe Mihevc, Janet ...

About that Trudeau kid

I went down to the convention center this afternoon to see what's up with the Liberal Party. I get that the party is trying to be uber democratic in electing its new leader but boy what a boring process. And, notwithstanding the tremendous accomplishments of some of the candidates in the running, they sure can't deliver a speech. And then Justin arrived. Suddenly it looked and felt like a convention.
Walking with his equally charismatic wife on his arm he made his way through a cheering crowd to the stage where media cameras that had not bothered to follow the previous three speakers jostled around him. He's a good speaker. He has a solid cadence and a strong voice. He stumbled a few times, hit his mic once, muffed a couple of the hard sell lines but you can attribute that to nerves. Today was one of the most ...

Come have a cocktail Friday night

Here is a link to information about the event I've been talking about on the air. It takes place on friday night at Downsview. It's a gourmet cocktail to raise money for Hand's Across The Nations a group I have been boosting for about eight years now. All of the money raised goes toward permanent improvements to communities in Bolivia and Mali. You can meet some of the amazing people who make this group work. They give up their vacations and fly at their own expense to do work year after year. And it really is changing lives.
Thanks for whatever help you can provide. I really believe in these guys.

Why we cover Ford's troubles

I'm not going to tell anyone what to think about Rob Ford's latest troubles. Our style is to provide information we think is relevant along with some analysis to provide context. We don't campaign for politicians and we don't campaign against them either.
A lot of listeners are angry about the Star's latest investigation and seem to think we should ignore it altogether. Judging by on line polls about 80% of our most motivated listeners are big Rob Ford fans and can't stand to hear a word spoken against him. They get particularly mad at Dave Agar, maybe because when criticism comes from a guy as objective and legendary as Dave...it hurts that much more.
Why are we talking about the story? Because Toronto is talking about it. In fact the whole country is captivated by it. I have people calling and writing from all over the place asking "what ...
