RIP RAY MANZAREK - I'm saddened to say that, after talking about The Doors with John Moore this morning, news has reached us that Ray Manzarek, virtuosos keyboardist and keeper of the flame, has died of cancer at age 74. He nurtured The Doors into existence after an encounter with Jim Morrison on Venice Beach and kept it's poetry alive long after Morrison's untimely death. To hear him speak in interviews was to hear the atmoshphere of that time come fluttering back. Our condolences to his family.

It’s a move that could have been made years ago, should have been made, and no doubt has been part of many heated discussions at what was once Research In Motion. The company made its early success by being synonymous with instant messaging and to give away their product’s most-popular feature may have seemed utter madness, but in hindsight it’s now easy to look at how things turned out for Google Maps and Android to understand why it would have worked. Having Google Maps available across all smartphone brands has meant that everyone has had a chance to use it ...

Dumb Ways To Die, ScoreCleaner, Marvel Unlimited

You can listen to my reviews every Monday on Moore in the Morning at 6:45 am

Dumb Ways To Die

With a catchy tune and cute, animated characters, Metro Train’s hilariously macabre PSA on transit safety was a viral hit last year. Now it’s back as a game that tests your reflexes and quick-thinking on the hazards of railway crossings, subways, and piranhas.

You must tilt the screen, blow on your microphone, and even spell out the word “patience” if you hope to avoid death through mishaps with rattlesnakes, toasters, and superglue. Tapping the screen will put out fires while wiping it will clean up vomit. The more tasks you win, the faster they get and the more extras you’ll unlock, although watching the characters get sliced, diced, bitten, and smeared is such a laugh that it’s a game that is as much fun ...

Google Now, Star Trek FX, Songza Music

You can listen to my reviews every Monday on Moore in the Morning at 6:45 am

If you use a service often enough you’ll soon become a regular to the staff. A waiter may order your “usual” each time you walk through the door or a grocer might make an extra effort to keep your favourite items in stock. Google Now is an effort to mimic this behavior with an app. It monitors the way you use Google Services and, over time, gives you the things you often search for without you having to ask.

It’s a sophisticated idea, but its use is rather simple at the moment. If you habitually look up things like the weather, sports scores, movie times, or stocks then yes, it will have that information pulled and at the ready for you on little digital cards. ...

Iron Man 3, The Nightjar, Touchfit George St-Pierre

You can listen to my reviews every Monday on Moore in the Morning at 6:45 am

Iron Man 3: The Official Game
iPhone/iPad/Android
Free-To-Play
The Temple Run series broke industry records by challenging you to keep running through a jungle. Iron Man 3 takes that same challenge to the skies. Using simple tilt-and-swipe controls you must dodge, bank, and shoot your way through an endless assault of jets, drones, missiles, and armored bad guys.
The graphics are red-hot amazing. They include a detailed 3D model of Iron Man that is worth downloading just for a look at alone. As you unlock speed upgrades and new armor suits, the game’s chase takes on a sense of acceleration that you’ll feel in the seat of your pants.

Twitter #music

A separate companion app for Twitter, #Music is aimed at encouraging you to follow bands, to tweet their most popular songs, and to help use Twitter to both measure and boost the popularity of today’s musicians. While giving you a tool to discover what your friends are listening to, it would seem that Twitter hopes to become a launch tool for new bands the way MySpace was during its heyday.

At launch the app is a bit tentative, as if Twitter is still working things out. There are feeds devoted to popularity (what’s trending), now playing (songs your friends have tweeted) and recommended for you (based on bands you follow). Each of these can be played like a streaming radio using a pop-up music player with clips ...

AP Twitter Breach Reveals We’re Just Too Easily Fooled

You can listen to my reviews every Monday on Moore in the Morning at 6:45 am

No, the White House was not attacked, and yes, President Obama is doing fine. For a few minutes this past Tuesday many people thought otherwise. It was a hoax, a fake tweet sent out using the Associated Press’ Twitter account which lent it just enough credibility to quickly spread and cause the stock market to dip in panic. Thankfully, when it became clear that no other news agency was carrying the story, the market recovered, but it left behind new concerns about how we trust and keep secure our news feeds.
Was the AP was “hacked”? I feel that’s a misleading description. A hack implies a form of breaking and entering. Their password wasn’t guessed, the encryption on it wasn’t broken, and Twitter’s own network wasn’t compromised. Let’s be clear, they ...

Your Steering Wheel Can Be A Drum Kit With Crazy Add-On

A company called Smack Attack is developing an interactive cover for your car’s steering wheel that will give it the sounds of a drum kit. The cover adds eight areas you can tap to activate the sounds of a tom-tom, snare, and bass drum along with cymbals and cowbell.

Not holding back on the novelty factor, the product will be called “Re-Inventing The Wheel” and will work as an accessory for your iPhone. Connected to your car’s stereo system it can be used to add your own percussion to your favourite music tracks. Since cars of different age connect with smartphones differently, it’ll have the option to work wirelessly through Bluetooth or an FM transmitter or a direct line-in cable.

Concert Vault is a preservation group devoted to giving new life to the live recordings amassed by industry promoters, club owners, and band managers throughout their careers. Through them you can stream thousands of concerts by big name artists such as Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead (to name only a few).

The archive goes back to the 1950’s while always adding recordings from new artists, such as Alabama Shakes, Reggie Watts, and DayTrotter. It includes concerts from festivals like Noise Pop or SXSW and seeks to give a home to any audio or video material that won’t find a commercial release.
