Wine Review June 10 - 2010 Tawse Sketches of Niagara Chardonnay - 2009 Fielding Estates Red Conception
2009 Fielding Red Conception - $18.95 - LCBO 189183 - Where to start on this excellent Red blend... First the great thing about Fielding is everything about their label scream summer, their logo is a Muskoka Chair after all. One of the great things about all these blends coming out of Ontario is there really are no rules about what you put in the bottle (I mean the Wildass Red I reviewed is a blend of 11 grapes). This is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot with a little bit of Syrah in the bottle. It makes for an interesting wine that is full of ripe, juicy berry flavours, plum, and a bit of spice that kicks in the end. Nice acidity and balance on the finish makes this very easy to drink.
Also I have to make note there is a great event going on at several wineries, including Fielding. If you get the chance check it out later today. Details at the following link: http://www.grazethebench.com/page/home
2010 Tawse Skteches of Niagara Chardonnay - $19.95 - VINTAGES 89037 - One of my greatest challenges as a reviewer of Ontario wines has been finding a great Oaked Chardonnay that is affordable, and consistently great. In February I tried the 2009 and just this past week I had a chance to try the 2010. You will not find a better value for Chardonnay in the LCBO from Ontario. Buttery flavours that roll off the back of the tongue. There is a lingering flavour that balances citrus, apple and caramel from the oak. I love this Chardonnay.
Often I am talking about reasons to go to Niagara and go and check out different events. There is a terrific opportunity to have the wineries come to you. The IYellow wine club is hosting event on the first day of summer where 28 wineries from Niagara will be in Liberty Village. There will be Food, Wine and Music... does it get any better than that to kick off the summer?
