Is The Sky Falling?

You might want to consider wearing a helmet if you find yourself walking underneath the Gardiner Expressway.

For the third time in less than a month, concrete has fallen from the underside of the roadway onto the street below.

The city, as far as I know, still have plans on rolling out construction on the massive roadway over the next ten years. The city seemingly has no problem with the falling chunks of cement.  They've told our reporters that the problem happens because over time water seeps into the concrete.

Great.  Is that how you will explain it to the family of a person who becomes brain damaged, or dies after being hit with a chunk of it?

Where the concrete fell Tuesday, hundreds of people walk by every day.  I've walked through the area myself.  Never once have I imagined that concrete could have fallen from the underpass.

I can't imagine my family would be won over by the 'it happens' argument.

The city will continue doing what it does - telling you that there is no need for concern.  That the Gardiner will be just fine over the next ten years.

And maybe it will.

But next time I walk under the Gardiner, I can tell you the story of Chicken Little won't be far from my thoughts.
