It was last summer, that horrific mass shooting outside the public housing complex on Danzig Street in Scarborough, I urged that our community get off it's collective fat ass and do something about innocent kids being shot because the next kid might be yours.
We all wrang our hands and said yeah, something must be done.
Now we jump ahead to this year. In the last 4 weeks 4 kids have been shot to death and as best we can tell these were all good kids, a 9-year old innocent and three 15-year olds gunned down before they're even old enough to drive a car.
4 kids in a month and what do we hear from police crime is still trending lower. We had more murders at this time last year. This is the kind of statistical drivel that infuriates me and I'm sure others. That these kids were black shouldn't matter but I fear that it does. What if this had been 4 white kids killed in a month, gunned down. I hate to admit it but there would be holy hell to pay.
So I have to ask, where is Mayor Rob Ford on this? Why hasn't he demanded action?
Where is Police Chief Bill Blair on this? I haven't heard a peep out of him. Is he even in town? I just don't know.
What about Premier Kathleen Wynne? Born in Richmond Hill, spent most of her adult life in Toronto. Surely these killings aren't going unnoticed by our so-called leaders. So I they don't go unnoticed why the hell hasn't anyone said anything.
There is a pressing need for leadership on this matter. Give us some assurance that these kids matter that their lives mattered and that you'll keep searching for solutions until you find something that works.
This is the day we find out the direction Premier Kathleen Wynne hopes to take in the Ontario Legislature.
She's written the Speech from the Throne to be read by David Onley, the Lieutenant-Governor.
Typically these speeches are broad strokes outlines, no details to speak of, that comes in specific legislation.
To Andrea Horwath and Tim Hudak, the opposition leaders, please don't react to this speech by saying it's lacking details. All Throne Speeches lack details. To simply state the obvious as some sort of informed response is nothing but political hot air and we certainly have enough of that going around.
