Well it's about time. We're expecting to hear at 10:30 this morning that the Ontario Government has finally decided to allow all front-line police officers to carry tasers as a less lethal weapon.
Until now Queen's Park would only allow select officers to carry the electronic rifles...ETF and other specialized units along with supervisory officers...all of whom had to under go training.
We're hearing that if any Police Service Board wants to deploy trasers to front-line officers it would be up to that board to decide and presumably pay for the training and the cost of buying the weapons. In Toronto's case that would be in the milions of dollars.
Once again the Liberals at Queen's Park have shown a gross inability to grasp the obvious: if cops have tasers they're less likely to kill people...unintended or otherwise.
What is really irritating about this is that Queen's Park had a a complete review of Taser use which concluded it is an appropriate law-enforcement tool. That was 4 years ago.
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Canadian Associatiion of Chief's of Police and invidiually, Toronto's Police Chief have all frontline officers should have acess to the weapon...
From 2005 to 2-thousand-9 no fewer than 7 inquest jurries recommended this...but those calls were ignored by the Queen's Park Liberals.
It is absolutely ludicrous and infuriating that Queen's Park somehow thought that you should make sure every police officer in Otnario is trained and required to carry a gun....but somehow it would be too risky to carry a taser.
Just so we're clear, there will be people who die after being tasered...of that there is no doubt. In the U.S. over a 7-year span, more than 3-hundred people died after being jolted by tasers....and in at least 50 of those deaths, the taser, was found to have at least contributed to those deaths.
