Ontario taxpayers are on the hook for more than $400 million for the McGuinty Government's decision to cancel the proposed gas plant in Oakville and move it to the Kingston area.
Sources have told the Globe and Mail that is what provincial Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk will say in her report to be tabled at 3pm this afternoon.
But the real bombshell is this: these sources say it is the AG's view the government could have walked away from the project without paying anything in compensation to Trans Canada Corporation. Documents show that even though the government was under no legal obligation to compensate TransCanada for lost profits, the Liberals settled up anyway because they wanted certainty as soon as possible and not have that hanging over their heads with a provincial election looming.
For her part, Premier Kathleen Wynne wants to stress that she was the one who asked for the Auditor General's report on the Oakville plant.
If the Auditor General is correct and the Liberals didn't have to compensate TransCanada on the Oakville cancellation but did it anyway to try to save their political backsides by foisting the cost upon taxpayers instead....that would be the most egregious thing the Liberals have done in this entire fiasco.
ROB FORD/SANDRO LISI
We are starting to get a better handle on what it was that led police to arrest Toronto mayor Rob Ford's friend and occasional driver, Sandro Lisi, on drug charges last week.
Both the Star and the Sun have an internal police document, which seems to have been leaked to them, which shows that before the so-called crack video scandal broke the mayor had his cell phone stolen from him.
This was last March. The documents show Sandro Lisi tried to recover a friend's stolen cellphone by offering marijuana in exchange. Sources have confirmed to both newspapers that the "friend" mentioned in the documents was Rob Ford....that the mayor was panicked about losing the phone. But no one explains why he was so panicked.
The Star's lead investigator Kevin Donovan was on NewsTalk 1010's Friendly Fire last evening saying this specific phone was not the one used to record the so-called crack video.
NewsTalk 1010 host and Sun columnist Joe Warming spoke to Mayor Ford last night. He'd just returned from Texas and didn't have anything to say about this story. His brother Doug Ford called it "a joke" claiming it is politically motivated.
On another matter Doug Ford has told the National Post that he was mistaken last week when he claimed that he's known all along that police were using a surveillance plane to track the Ford's. Now he says he's not sure who was doing it and that for all he knows it could have been the media.
One thing you have to know about the city councillor, he's prone to blurt before he thinks and no matter what happens, it seems to me he blames everything on "lefties" or the media. In my mind he has become the city hall equivalent of Captain Queeg from the Caine Mutiny (corrected after airing)
There was a Caine Mutiny (corrected after airing) and we may well be seeing a mutiny in Ford Nation shaping up.
One example....Doug Holyday...now off at Queen's Park as an MPP is actually lobbying city council not to go along with Mayor Rob and Councillor Doug's choice to replace Holyday. He wants council to accept his recommendation of Peter Leon instead of failed political Chris Stockwell...the choice of Etobicoke Community Council which includes the Fords. Holyday is saying Leon is the guy his former ward residents want in there not Stockwell.
This is just one issue coming up at this week's city council which gets underway this morning...the first session back from summer break. The subway fiasco is on the agenda...cost overruns in the many millions of dollars for Union Station are also up for discussion and the only prism that seems to mean anything is the prism of re-election. Yes folks, city hall is about to get even more partisan than it normally is because we're about to open the gates for the race to the municipal election a year from now.
The Nobel Prize for Physics has just been awarded to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs. They of the Higgs-Boson fame...the so-called "God Particle" which was confirmed in July of last year.
Back in the 60's Englert and Higgs separately theorized about the existence of the particle. Higgs got his name on it but Englert was said to be first with the theory to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.
