11 days ago there was a daylight murder in Vaughan and it had all the markings of a mob hit. Carmine Verducci, a 56-year old hit man was gunned down in the parking lot of a strip mall at Highway 7 and Martin Grove Road.
It was 2 o'clock on a Thursday afternoon.
Two white men were seen fleeing in a grey or silver Honda Civic or something similar.
Yesterday at 4:30 in the afternoon, and 3 kilometres east on Highway 7 at Weston Road...another daylight murder in the parking lot of a big box mall.
York Regional Police Constable Andy Pattenden says it's too soon to say if the two murders in Vaughan are linked.
It's tough to watch on video so you can well imagine what it was like for the 39-hundred people at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus in Providence, Rhode Island late yesterday morning.
A lot of the people in the crowd were kids. They were watching women acrobats. 8 of them were on a rig suspended about 40 feet off the ground and it looked like they were hanging by their hair. In reality they were in their rigs. Suddenly the entire apparatus collapsed and the women fell to the ground, the rig on top of them and a dancer who was on the ground performing below.
The 9 were seriously hurt but the injuries are not life threatening. Valerie Cardoso was there with her kids and she's worried about the impact this has had on her youngsters.
"That could potentially ruin them for going to the show forever after witnessing that," she says.
The video of the mishap is on our website: newstalk1010-dot-com. As for the cause, nothing yet.
Ask traditional pollsters and their eyes squint, their foreheads wrinkle and there's a sneer about the methodology of polling done by Forum Research. This is the company that does robo-calling...automated telephone surveys.
Forum is first out of the gate with a public opinion poll on the state of Ontario politics since Premier Kathleen Wynne decided to pull the plug and get the Legislature dissolved.
This automated phone poll was conducted over the weekend. It shows Tim Hudak and his PC's with 38 percent support. Kathleen Wynne and her Liberals at 33 percent and Andrea Horwath and her New Democrats with 22.
The president of Forum, Lorne Bozinhoff says that in order for the PC's to win, they'd need more than 40 percent. Based on these first numbers, Bozinhoff projects another Liberal minority government...picking up 49 seats..a gain of one. The PC's 45 seats...a gain of 8. The NDP would lose 8 and fall to 21 seats.
It's odd to think NDP seats would convert to the PC's...but hey, stranger things have happened.
Basically what these numbers show is that in the ridings where the Conservatives lead, they lead big....but they don't have a lead in most ridings, the Liberals do.
What is clear is that this is a tight race between the Liberals and PC's and the NDP is suffering. The numbers seem to suggest that it's actually Andrea Horwath who is dragging down her party...which is a complete reversal of the way the numbers have been playing out in the past. She's been pulling the party along with her. Now it seems Hudak and company have convinced Ontarians that Horwath is to blame for propping up the Liberals. The election campaign got underway on the weekend. Officially it doesn't start until after the election writ comes down on Wednesday. Suffice to say...a lot of things will happen between now and election day June 12th and this Forum Research poll will be long forgotten.
The Raptors finally seem to have captured the hearts of Torontonians. Their unexpected NBA playoff run came to an end yesterday afternoon in game 7 of the first round against Brooklyn but if it showed anything at all, it was that sports fans in this town want something, anything to cheer about.
After the game, Brooklyn superstar Kevin Garnett with absolutely no prompting said of Toronto fans "this has got to be one of the best places and best atmospheres I’ve played in in a long time." Garnett says this place was rockin and a "big shout out to the Toronto Raptors, their fans and their city.”
NewsTalk 1010's Mike Toth will have the game details coming up on sports.
