WATCH: Expensive hospital parking? What the leaders would do

Those parking at hospitals complain about being gouged

We've all had to go to the hospital now and again. Maybe to go to the ER or maybe to visit a sick family member. Parking rates there can be astronomical.

The Liberals are proposing to give those who have to visit often a break. They included a promise in their newly-release platform to cap or fully cut hospital parking fees for people who make frequent visits to the hospital - either because they're sick themselves or family members are.

At Sunnybrook hospital, a day pass costs $26. There are weekly passes available for $65.

John has been visiting his mom who has a heart condition for over a month and a half. He says even with the weekly rate, he's paid over $300 in parking alone.

Others, come twice a week for appointments, which wouldn't require getting more than a day pass.

When asked, Tory leader Tim Hudak wouldn't say what he would do. He says the Liberals encouraged high parking rates so hospitals could make money.

The NDP have yet to respond to a request for comment.

Walk, transit, cab are all reasonable options for most people.

@frank If you happen to live in Toronto, then yes, you are correct. However, "most people" doesn't cut it. MOST people have to travel from locations where walking, cabs or transit aren't an option. A lot of people have to come here from outside the GTA. Not only do they have to travel from whatever small town they're from, but they have to go broke just parking in order to see their loved ones.

The parking fees are usurious. They're pretty bad. The fault lies with the government, because instead of ensuring hospitals have sufficient funding, they told the hospitals to go ahead and raise money from parking fees and by putting a Tim Horton's in their lobby.

Stumblebum Tim fumbling and bumbling a simple question again !!.
Next time, Tim - just try to answer instead of looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

@Sammy from Scarborough It sounded like he kinda addressed it, when he said he would help hospitals save money by "paring down" the administration. The other stuff was superfluous to the question. Regardless, it'll take a lot more than just cutting administrators to fix the high price of parking. So this is definitely not something that's on his plate.

This election is Tim's to lose. If he manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, in spite of the abysmal liberal track record, then he needs to be tarred and feathered. Really, with the liberal's record, a turnip should be able to run against the liberals and win. If Tim manages to screw that up, then I have zero pity for him. He should have bailed a long time ago, and failing that, the PCs should have turfed him a long time ago. People should have done that, then pressured John Tory to take over the PCs instead of pressuring him to waste his talents on being mayor of Toronto.
