Touch the Lucky Loonie
Canadians have a chance this month to bring the national Olympic hockey teams a touch of good luck for the Vancouver Games. The so-called Lucky Loonie's protective casing has been removed from the coin's display at the Hockey Hall of Fame.Hockey commentator Don Cherry was the first to touch the Lucky Loonie on Monday morning. The coin has been at the Hall since shortly after Canada's men's and women's teams won gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics. The loonie had been buried at centre ice ahead of the Salt Lake Games by Canadian ice-maker Trent Evans. After the victories, the coin was dug up and presented to Team Canada GM Wayne Gretzky, who later donated it to the Hall.Visitors to the Hall will be able to touch the coin for good luck until February 28, the date of the men's gold-medal game at the Vancouver Olympics.
