Curlers in great shape for Olympics
Curlers in great shape for Olympics
Canadians who believe that curling is a sport for the beer-drinking, out-of-shape crowd are living in the past according to members of Canada's Olympic curling team who long ago adopted fitness as a way of life. There was a time when it wasn't unusual to see a curler throwing a rock with a lit cigarette hanging from his lip or quenching his thirst with a beer at the conclusion of an end. With the inclusion of curling as a full Olympic sport the competition has increased dramatically and most curlers have gone from fat to fit.John Morris, the third for the Canadian men, balances a career as a firefighter with curling and has written a book on fitness.Cheryl Bernard works out five or six days a week and uses a personal trainer. She says the old stereotypes no longer apply and curlers are real athletes.
