The Friday morning commute along the westbound Gardiner Expressway was a real mess.
Just before 5:30am, a luxury pickup truck slammed into the pole of the overhead sign near Royal York Road. The impact brought down the metal trussing that the sign is attached to, blocking all lanes of traffic.
Toronto Police expect lanes closures on the scene into the afternoon. Cst. Clint Stibbe says the vehicle jumped curb and crashed into the guardrail before it hit the pole.
The driver ditched the SUV but was caught a short time later, not far away. The 36-year old man had only a few cuts and scrapes and was arrested on the scene. He has been charged with dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a collision.
The crash almost ruined the honeymoon of a newlywed couple from Italy.
The highway sign came down on a rental car the couple was in, on their way to Pearson Airport to catch a flight home. Police say the couple made it to the airport on time.
