With speculation running rampant that the mayor may be suffering from a possible drug addiction, certified addiction councillor and Newstalk 1010 Show Host Mark Elliot offers Rob Ford is keeping the city in chaos, much like an addict would with their family.
Elliot contends someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol can still be highly functional. He underlines addiction is usually only visible when a person is at his or her absolute lowest point.
He stresses addictions usually come in pairs, such as alcohol and food, or drugs and power. Which is why he says not all drug addicts may take on stereotypes of being waif-like or unsuccessful.
Elliot underlines power can also come into play when someone is approached to talk about a possible addiction. He says they can get defensive about the issue.
The addiction councillor says most families handle addiction badly and instead of pushing someone to get help, they'll defend the person.
As for time needed for rehabilitation, Elliot says recovery is usually around three months and suggests the person lay low for a year. He says any stresses - such as being in the public eye - would be too much for a newly sober person to handle.
