Durham Police Officer demoted for offensive tweets

A Durham Police Officer who set up a parody account and directed offensive tweets towards the Ontario Ombudsman, has been demoted for 9 months.

Detective Jeff Caplan pleaded guilty to discredible conduct at a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

Caplan will be knocked down to the rank of constable, first class and has been ordered to undergo training on workplace harrassment and creating a positive work environment.

According to the Toronto Star who spoke with his lawyer, the penalty of demotion falls one step short of firing the 14 year veteran of the force.

The hearing lasted less than an hour.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Caplan sent two tweets to Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin, on August 8th.

One called Marin a 'complete douchebag' and the other suggested he was a 'carded member' of Al Qaeda.

The tweets came shortly before Marin was to announce a probe into police policies for defusing potentially violent situations. That came in the wake of the shooting death of 18 year old Sammy Yatim.
