The province’s Labour Minister is expected to announce legislation that would protect workers at temporary agencies who are often the victims of workplace abuses.

The province’s Labour Minister is expected to announce legislation that would protect workers at temporary agencies who are often the victims of workplace abuses.

The Toronto Star is reporting the ‘precarious’ workers legislation would make companies that hire temp agencies liable for severance pay, unpaid wages and other employment violations.  The paper reports that recruitment fees for migrant workers would also be banned as part of this legislation.

The move would make Ontario the first province in Canada to enact such legislation for temporary agencies and their clients.

The new legislation is also expected to expand workers’ ability to claim unpaid wages and extend health and safety protections for unpaid interns according to the Star’s sources.
