Executive Committee Defers Porter Decision

Motion to come back before Executive Committee in January.

Toronto's executive committee has voted to defer the proposed Porter Airlines expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

The deferral passed 11-2 meaning the motion won't be back up for debate until January.

The only two members of the committee to vote against the deferral were Mayor Rob Ford and Councillor Peter Milczyn.

The other councillors felt the deferral was the best move given a recent staff report which stated that not enough information had been provided by Porter Airlines, Transportation Canada and the Toronto Port Authority.

City staff say there are still too many unanswered questions about how the expansion will impact the surrounding community and infrastructure.

I like the short deferral time. It basically tells the bureaucrats "get off you bums and get us the information, we haven't got all year".

You have those on the right that will support it, no matter what, and those on the left that will no support it no matter what. This deferral is obviously targeted at the middle. "Unknowns" make the middle nervous.

IMO Adam Vaughan must be related to McGuinty and his fiberals. His BS about infrastructure, congestion, etc. smacks of an excuse to try to stop the airport expansion. Where was he when he approved expansion after expansion of downtown condos. What about the infrastructure and congestion for all that?

Perhaps he should move to Amish country where they believe in eschewing modern technology.

I live in the area and many residents do not want the expansion due to increased noise pollution. As I type this at 10:34 pm on a Tuesday night there is the sound of large engines in my living room while the windows are closed (it sounds like a large vacuum). I am getting up early to work and pay taxes but I cant go to sleep til the last plane has taken off. Cars park and idle in front of our door/window even though there is a designated drop off and pick up area. The reality is that if you live this everyday it's not healthy where as once in a while is a different experience. We have Pearson, sorry if that location is inconvenient for government and CEO's flying in from Ottawa and Montreal (Deluce's friends). Regular Residents Vs People in Power
