Budget battle over transit may be looming

Transportation minister challenges NDP to vote against transit expansion

The province is now considering the recommendations in the transit panel report, including a gas tax to pay for the Big Move project.

This report seems to be setting the stage for a big budget fight between the minority Liberal government and the NDP that has been keeping them afloat with their support.

Which means - a possible spring election.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says she doesn't believe that new taxes, tolls or fees are the right way to go when it comes to transit expansion.

Transportation Minister Glen Murray is ready to have a budget fight over this, which is where the Liberals' transit funding plan will be outlined.

He dared Horwath to vote down the budget over this, so the NDP would fight a campaign saying "no: to hundreds of thousands of new jobs created with transit construction.

Meantime, The Tories say if the Liberals can move around money to fund Full-Day Kindergarten, they can find a way to move things around fro transit.

Leader Tim Hudak says taxing people isn't the way to go.
