Wood-frame buildings pose a significant fire hazard when in construction because the wood is exposed.
The four-storey condo project in the centre of the Kingston fire was just that. President of the Ontario Building Officials Association Mike Seiling says wood-frame buildings are safe when fully constructed, not just because the framing is covered but because sprinkler systems are in place.
Seiling says the construction followed the building code.
The Ontario government allows buildings four-storeys and under to be framed with wood. A Tory private members bill has been tabled to change that to six-storeys and under.
The province says it can't comment on this specific building but says building codes come into effect when construction is complete.
