Supreme Court strikes down anti-prostitution laws

Canada's highest court has struck down the country's prostitution laws

Canada's highest court has struck down the country's prostitution laws in their entirety in a unanimous 9-0 ruling.

But the Supreme Court of Canada decision also gives Parliament a one-year reprieve to respond with new legislation.

The high court struck down all three prostitution-related laws: against keeping a brothel, living on the avails of prostitution, and street soliciting.

The ruling is a victory for sex workers seeking safer working conditions because it found that the laws violated the charter guarantee to life, liberty and security of the person.

Ontario's Appeal Court previously struck down the ban on brothels on the grounds it exposed women to more danger.

NEWSTALK 1010 legal analyst Edward Prutschi explains the implications of the Supreme Court's decicison...

Today's landmark ruling comes 34 years after the Supreme Court last upheld the country's anti-prostitution laws.

This is a developing story - check back for updates...

Prostitution is alive and well at Queen's Park, as evidenced by all the fiscal scandals the Liberals have managed, so why shouldn't it be legal for citizens?

I guess I do not understand exactly what has changed in the 34 years since the laws were last upheld. Is it because the charter of rights is less than 34 years old and in that context the older laws are now invalid?

    "safer working conditions"
I think a phrase like this does not apply when relating to activities that do not better our Canadian society as a whole.

Two wrong's NEVER make a right. If AIDS and violent pimps are a problem, how about helping to finding these people a non sexually degrading line of work?

    what happened to our country..
