A man in his 40s is in critical but stable condition, his 3-year-old daughter in hospital after nearly drowning in a rec centre pool in Mississauga.

It happened Saturday morning on Absolute Ave. near Hurontario St and Burnhamthorpe Rd. The rec centre, nestled between a series of condo buildings includes a gym and Pilates studio.

Peel Police Constable George Tudos says there were about a dozen people in the pool area when the trouble started. He says some of them helped pull the father and daughter's bodies from the pool.

Local who use the pool tell Newstalk 1010 they don't recall ever seeing a lifeguard on duty there.

The girl was revived on scene and rushed to hospital. She's now alert and breathing.

Her father was without vital signs when police and paramedics arrived. He was resuscitated on the way to the hospital.

Tudos says police are speaking with witnesses and looking at surveillance video to try to piece together what happened.
