Province looks to improve GP access
Not enough same-day or next-day appointments available

The province is trying to tighten up the health system to make it easier for you to see your GP.

As it stands, it's become increasingly difficult for Ontarians to make same- or next-day appointments.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says the province wants to change that because those who can't get into see their doctor often go to the ER, putting a strain on hospitals that doesn't need to be there.

She says she hopes Ontario can achieve this balance by initiatives that are slowly being put into place. Matthews points specifically to how some doctors are leaving space in their calendars for same and next-day appointments.

Matthews made the comments after addressing the Empire Club of Canada on Monday.
