Junio: Being mentioned as possible flag bearer is "flattering"

But speed skater says many other Canadian athletes deserve honour as well

He didn't win a medal, but some are calling for Canadian speed skater Gilmore Junio to carry the flag for Canada at the closing ceremony in Sochi.

After he was approached by his coaches, Junio gave up his spot in the men's 1000 m final to teammate Denny Morrison, because Junio believed he had a better shot at ending up on the podium.

Morrison won silver.

Some athletes have taken to social media pushing Canada to name Junio as flag bear to close out the games.

He told John Moore on Newstalk 1010 Thursday morning he was flattered by the suggestion.

"Being the flag bear at any time is a huge honour. To have my name thrown in there is pretty remarkable, but there's a lot of great Canadian stories at the Olympics that have happened and have yet to happen."

Junio told John "if it (carrying the flag) happened I would be more than happy to take it but there are a lot of great athletes that deserve it as well."

Hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser carried the flag in the opening ceremony for Team Canada.
