Mayor Ford in L.A. for talk-show appearance

Ford is expected to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday

Mayor Rob Ford is in Tinseltown for a couple of days.

Despite the fact that the mayor will be in town for one of Hollywood's biggest nights, he won't be rubbing elbows with acting elite on the red carpet.

There wasn't enough time to get a security clearance, Councillor Doug Ford told CP24.

But Ford says they may be checking out some of the much-talked about parties.

"Rumour has it Jimmy holds the best Oscar parties there are and I'm sure we're going to be wandering around a few of them," Ford said.

Mayor Ford called Newstalk 1010 host and Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington with the news that he was travelling to L.A. and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel's Monday night show.

"He was like a kid in a candy store," says Warmington, who spoke with the mayor over the phone. "He called me up, he was excited, like a 12-year-old."

The mayor called Warmington Saturday, just before he boarded a plane in Chicago.

Ford is in L.A. with three staff members - his chief of staff, communications assistant and driver - and his brothers Doug and Randy.

Warmington says he's not sure why Ford chose to appear on Kimmel but says people at the show have been "working every contact" to try and get Ford on. "Everybody that knows Rob has gotten a call from Jimmy Kimmel."

Including Warmington.

When Ford arrived at the L.A. airport, Kimmel was there to pick him up.

According to councillor Ford, and to tweets from the the mayor's account, Ford is busy shaking hands, talking up Toronto's reputation as Hollywood North and inviting people to the city.

I wonder if the Toronto paparazzi is going to follow the mayor to L.A. Mr. Ford did you have a drink? Did you do drugs? Are you going to apologize...... Aaaaah shut-up you bunch of broken records. Nobody cares for your repeat, useless questions. I thought that maybe you needed an education to be a reporter. I guess I was wrong. Mayor Ford, have a great time. You're just as big a star as anyone who is nominated for an award. Make Toronto proud. Ford More Years. It's time to "Take The Power Back"

@AdrianoC1981 This is the type of response we come to expect from Ford Nation. Pathetic and a total embarrassment to our city.

@Mike What exactly is the embarrassment? The fact that the Toronto media is not educated enough to ask the mayor actual questions regarding the mayoral race or the fact that they persistently attempt to swing the voters of Toronto away from the Ford camp. Mayor Ford is the only politician in recent history to my knowledge that has campaigned, got elected(with the majority of the vote) and then fulfilled the majority of his campaign promises for which the people of Toronto elected him. The only embarrassment here is that ignorant folks like yourself "Mike" are not educated enough to see that the media are the ones continuing to give Toronto a "bad reputation" with their constant harassment of our mayor. Wake up and smell the gravy.

@AdrianoC1981 "Mayor Ford is the only politician in recent history to my knowledge that has campaigned, got elected(with the majority of the vote) and then fulfilled the majority of his campaign promises for which the people of Toronto elected him. "

Apparently you are the one that isn't educated here.

He won a plurality of the vote, not a majority.

He promised a Sheppard subway and said he had a means of paying for it, we are still getting LRT and despite having now 5 years (4 years + 1 year of campaigning) he still has no plan to pay for an extension to the Sheppard subway (even after spending over $150,000 on a study he supported on how to fund it).

He promised an end to the land transfer tax. We still have the land transfer tax.

He promised an end to the gravy train. Councillors still get plenty of perks (free zoo passes, metropasses, etc) and their office expenses have actually effectively increased. Ford himself also gave his staff $5,000 raises just to stay with him and created an entire new position in his office for his former football coach (and then later doubled that guys salary to well past the 6 figure mark and never explained what it is he actually does).

He promised to fix the repair backlog in Toronto Community Housing. We still have an $864 million dollar repair backlog and his efforts to sell some of it to pay for the repairs have barely made a dent. Its actually increased by $200 million since he took office.

Other than the garbage privatization, getting rid of the vehicle registration tax, and making the TTC an essential service designation (which is just a financial mistake because it gives all the power to the unions and arbitrators), he hasn't actually fulfilled many of his campaign promises. Certainly not half of them.

@12312312 12312312, you apparently believe that all these issues can be tackled and conquered in one term. Impossible. Rob Ford promised subway, not LRT's. The other mayoral hopeful are the ones that are preaching the LRTs. To my recollection, Mayor Ford calls them "glorified streetcars", which they truly are. As to your point on community housing, if it wasn't for Rob Ford(also the only mayor I can recall that even stepped foot into community housing) then the backlog would be even greater then the numbers that you so graciously provided.None of the other sophisticated, prim and proper councillors could give a rat's you know what about the people affected in community housing, all they care about is themselves. Rob Ford has already gone to the federal government to ask for more funding for community housing, so I feel that was not a broken promise. As for the $5000.00 raises you speak of, I'm pretty sure they were bonuses, not raises. However, raise or bonus, all councillors including the mayor are given staff budgets every year and I am quite sure the mayor was within his budget. The land transfer tax is one that the mayor has been trying to get rid of for years now, but we all know that the tax and spend lefties are not willing to budge on a tax grab revenue tool. The mayor only gets One vote on council. Maybe you should be preaching to councillors like Vaughan, Carroll, Layton, Kelly, Ainslie, Fletcher, Mihevc, Davis....need I continue. Bottom line is that Mayor Rob Ford has done nothing but respect the average Torontonion's pocket book and yet some folks are concerned that he's "lied" about his personal life. You all need to get over it and figure out that Rob Ford truly is The People's Mayor. I hope my response is good enough for you, if not feel free to re-post. I am well aware that not everyone will agree with my opinions, but they are mine and I am entitled to them.

@Townie I was never asking for nor was I in need of salvation. Being a part of Ford Nation has given me the peace of mind that when I go to sleep at night I have a mayor that looks out for my pocketbook. Past mayors and current councillors have been caught repediatly with their hands in the cookie jar. I feel very comfortable with Mayor Rob Ford in charge because he really does care about the little guys. Everyone has personal issues and I'm sure if the Toronto paparazzi were following other councillors and mayoral candidates around 24/7 they would be able to dig up a hell of a lot of dirt on them too. Rob Ford has lied in the past about his personal life and has been scrutinized for it repediatly. On the other hand, other elected and non elected officials for that matter have lied repediatly in regards to actual political matters and the media(especially the Toronto Star) has not even blinked an eye towards the colprits. I am disappointed to see that we are living in a society where people are more concerned about a politician lying about his personal life, rather then the politicians who are lying and cheating their constituents.

@AdrianoC1981 Toronto reporters will look like a bunch of morons if they follow Ford to LA, that's what they look like everyday in Toronto chasing him around asking the same worn out questions...

      @sally Like they always have.

For people who like to bash Ford, you're going to have to use some different arguments than the standard ones you use for all politicians. Most politicians travel on the public dime and bill all expenses to the public, the Fords do not.

Whatever you have against the Fords, you'll have to look somewhere else than them misspending taxpayers money for their travel.

    * * * MAYOR FORD WINS AGAIN! * * *

Another accomplishment by our very own mayor. Mayor Fords promotion of film in Toronto is millions and millions of dollars to reap in the future. Who else could
pull this off?, . . .only the positive, perfect example of a winner !

Further, Kimmel is scoring big too, riding the positive wave of Mayor Ford. All Americans will discover the real truth, and experience the epiphany about
    our Mayor Ford.
    Eureka, he's a regular guy!

I'm glad he's a favourite to win the mayoral election. He deserves it over and over.

    Good going Mayor Ford.

    Thank you NewsTalk 1010

I'm actually not too sure about Ford's willingness to appear on Kimmel's show.

First off, we all know what's going to happen.. Kimmel will milk this for what it's worth, and will not be taking Ford seriously. It's all for the ratings. If Ford thinks he's going to go on the show and get away with saying stuff like stopping the gravy train, and he's got the best track record of any mayor going, then he doesn't understand how late night comedy shows work.

So, two possible scenarios... One, Ford knows exactly what he's in for. And is okay with laughing at himself, which ironically, is the only way in which he can maintain his celebrity status. The audience loves famous people who can laugh at their own dumb mistakes, and will give them a pass.

Scenario two, Ford doesn't have a clue what Kimmel is about to do to him, and it won't end well. The audience isn't as forgiving of people who they initially thought were interesting, but turned out to be some dummy way out in left field with no clue.

Either scenario is very interesting, and makes me wanna watch.

@Angry Bill Well put and thoughtful.....

I didn't watch it (went to bed early), but how did it go? I'm more hoping for the first scenario...

@Karl Burgin You still got time. He's guesting tonight. The last one was just a cameo.
    3. Angry Bill posted on 03/04/2014 09:15 AM
@Karl Burgin Unfortunately, looks like it was more of the second scenario. :-/
