WATCH: NDP wants to give $100 hydro rebates

Party says it can find savings in the system to be passed down to you

The province's NDP say they have a plan to give you a $100 rebate each year on your hydro bills.

It's part of a list of "priorities" leader Andrea Horwath is unveiling before the minority Liberal budget gets tabled this spring.

Horwath is proposing to merge all hydro agencies to cut down on duplication, stop a billion dollar subsidy for electricity exports to the US and have the auditor look into private power contracts after what happened with the gas plant scandal.

She says it will save money in the system and ultimately, be passed on to ratepayers.

However, Premier Kathleen Wynne doesn't seem warm to the idea.

While Wynne says she understand costs are high, she says NDP's "one off plan" doesn't guarantee reducing energy costs in the long term.

The premier says the Liberal government has been trying to keep costs down, pointing to stopping plans of building new nuclear reactors.

It all seems like gimmickry to me. We'll give you 15% back on your auto insurance! (yeah, right.. by whose mathematics did you figure that out with?) We'll give you $100 back on your hydro bill!

We don't need gimmicks. The problems in government are systemic in nature, and fixing them requires a very deep, understanding of the problem and what's causing it. I don't believe the NDP have the depth of understanding required.

What scares me is the possibility that the libs have the understanding, but are too corrupt and short-sighted to implement any real solutions. I would almost hope it's just that they don't have the understanding. I don't know which scenario would be worse.. the liberals being corrupt, or simply inept. It's one of those two. Take yer pick. Could they be both?

Cancelling the nuke plant goes to show you that the Liberals still cant do math. On a cost per kwh basis, nuke is the lowest cost alternative to hydro or coal.

Wind is having huge technical issues right now because bearings are failing prematurely. Gas is not environmentally friendly as it creates CO2. Why dont they talk about that. Solar is just not affordable.

The true affordable option is nuke provided they run the plants full out and use the excess electricity to generate hydrogen gas which burns totally clean in cars or other electrical plants when needing peak power levels

@Ernie Disagree re Liberals not knowing math. They know how to count ridings and will spend whatever it takes of our money to win those ridings. Value to Ontario, our economy, our future, etc. have nothing to do with the way they govern.

They would hand out cigarettes to babies if it meant winning more ridings.

Just listened to Horvath explaining this credit. She complains about the money the Liberals are wasting. Is she an f***ing moron or is she an f***ing liar.

Horvath has propped up this corrupt and incompetent government and for her to complain about Liberal waste is like having the getaway driver in a bank robbery complain about the robber.

Will Ontario voters ever ever wake up to this stealing and incompetence?

I afraid she's both. And you may want to add to that list, she's Kathleen Wynne's f***ing lover.
