Matt Stajan on leave from Flames

Former Toronto Maple Leaf Matt Stajan has taken a personal leave from the Calgary Flames after the death of his newborn son.

In a statement, the Flames that little Emerson Stajan died Monday following childbirth.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with (wife) Katie and Matt at this difficult time", the team said. "We appreciate that everyone has and will continue to respect their privacy during this period."

A private memorial service is in the works.

Stajan signed a four-year extension with the Flames in January, but the 30-year-old Mississauga native started his career in Toronto, wearing the blue and white between 2004 and 2010.
