York police are warning snowmobilers about deteriorating ice conditions on Lake Simcoe.

An Air2 helicopter out on patrol captured video of large stretches of melting ice (see below).

Const Laura Nicolle says you can see where the ice is thinning out and cracking.

She says police wanted to warn the public about the condition.

"People are sometimes still going out on the lakes, whether snowmobiling, skating or ice fishing."

Police are asking you to keep in mind that no surface of ice is ever completely safe.

Nicolle says if you want to head out there to enjoy the long winter we've had, make sure to check local ice conditions first.
