Police say a man is fighting for his life after falling from the stands at Montreal`s Olympic Stadium during a preseason baseball game Friday night.

Police spokesman Danny Richer says the approximately 40 year old victim fell 10 to 15 metres to the ground behind the perimeter fence at centre field.

Richer said it happened around 10:20 in the evening, toward the end of the game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets.

A witness tells CTV Montreal that the man was in high spirits and ran around, trying to get the crowd to start a wave. The witness says the man tried to stand on a railing and lost his balance.

The man was rushed to hospital with injuries Richer described as life-threatening.

Police are interviewing witnesses as they continue their investigation, but have released few other details.
