There's sad news from animal rescuers in the St. Catharines area.

Officials announced through Twitter on Thursday morning that an abandoned lobster it had rescued on Wednesday has passed away.

The tweet from the Lincoln County Humane Society (@LincolnCountyHS) read:

"Sad news, Mickey the Lobster has died, he died in peace and quiet over night, but had 3 offers to fly out east. Thanks for the well wishes."

Mickey had been abandoned in a box in the parking lot of a fast food joint.

The Humane Society had been going on the assumption the lobster was left there as part of an April Fools prank.

By late Wednesday afternoon, Mickey had become an Internet sensation, making headlines from coast to coast.
