About 100 people were arrested and at least 44 people taken to hospital when a massive college party in Southern California devolved into a street brawl.

It happened in the densely populated beachside community of Isla Vista Saturday night.  Some 15, 000 people showed up for the annual Deltopia spring break bash.

More than 100 police officers were called in to break the party up after a cop was hit in the head with a backpack full of alcohol bottles. He suffered what's being called a "significant injury".  A deputy was hit in the face with a brick.

Some cars were destroyed as students smashed windshields and jumped on the hoods.

Some partiers threw rocks and bottles at police officers.  They retaliated, firing tear gas, bean bags and rubber bullets into the crowd.

Among those hospitalized, many were treated for alcohol poisoning.
