UPDATE: York University students launch $20.5 million lawsuit over food court shooting

The lawsuit stems from a shooting at the Keele Campus food court early last month

Eight York University students are suing the school for $20.5 million.

The lawsuit stems from a shooting at the Keele Campus food court early last month.

Two young women who were hurt when the gun went off are among the group of students behind the legal action.

One has serious leg injuries after being shot in the leg and the other was hit with shrapnel.

Annie Malik says the incident left her unable to go to school or do chores around the house.

The group's lawyers allege York University does not place a high enough priority on campus security.

22-year old Kemon Edwards is charged with several offences in connection with the shooting, including aggravated assault.

This is a disgusting cash grab, somebody looking for a big pay day. It's no wonder people view lawyers with such contempt. I hope they lose and the judge orders them to pay York University's legal fees.

BOLOGNA~~~ So it they got shot in the streets, who would they sue?? Security can only be in some areas, some of the time, and not all of the time. It is unfortunate that this happened, but Murphy's law ...

Just another publicity seeking grab, with the hope of getting some cash!!

@john John, you are a total moron. Did armed guards stop the shooting at Fort Hood Texas? Did armed guards stop the shootings at any of the U.S. universities? No.

More guns is not the answer.

@Jim dude that was a military base . tones of solders with ( supost to be ) weapons . the resign why he got soo many killed was because only the mps had weapons . if all the army people had them it would not have lasted as long as it did . thats like going into a police station and try to rob the cops .

Another disgusting money grab...the courts better do the right thing and throw out this frivolous lawsuit. The university cannot be held accountable.for some lunatics actions.
People like these girls disgust me...

This is is just another disgusting attempt to become rich off the taxpayer. These are girls are the only very epitome of greed and misguided attempt at having a privileged life without having to earn it or work for it. The only courts had better do the right now thing and dismiss this frivolous lawsuit.

I'm actually a student from York and I do understand that we're depicted as the crime spot of all universities. I feel like it's such a biased view of this school. If you really do your research, York is not number one in crime rates, but the reason why people think that is because they actually have the decency to report and warn the media.

Anyway point is that I do agree that where they were should have been a safe place but thing is like someone here mentioned, you cannot have security at every single corner. It's just not possible and yes it's true if they did get shot out on the street who would they sue? They should have looked at this and been relieved that wow, I just got non life threatening injuries. They're lucky they survived a gun shot! Is it really necessary to sue 20 million dollars?! I don't think so. If someone actually died, I guess it'd be more understandable but no one did. It just looks like they just want to get money fast. Have they stopped to consider that everyone else has to pay extra for tuition if they win?! It's really selfish if they're ok with that.
