Councillor: Downsview Park should be run by the city

Maria Augimieri says she wants Ottawa to "set Downsview free"

If the federal government wants to reopen the debate on how to develop Downsview Park, the local councillor and community wants the city to take it over, to make all the decisions.

Maria Augimieri says she wants Ottawa to "set Downsview free" and has started up an online petition to   get the Canada Lands company to transfer over the Park to Toronto.

This comes after a memo from Ottawa revealed the future of the Park might be in the air - which includes reopening the development debate. Townhouses and condos have already been OKed for a portion of the land.

Augimieri says the city should make these sort of decisions for the Park, not "a backroom in Parliament Hill." She stresses local residents are concerned about development and says the only reason why the federal government wants to re-open the debate is "greed."

She compares more residential development at Downsview Park to building condos in High Park.

Information on the online petition can be found here.

The idea should be to reduce responsibility from the circus known as Toronto city council. Why would we give them more to mess up? They'd take 10 years to make any decision, after which no one would remember or care what they were debating about.

Absolutely ridiculous idea. City Hall doesn't need any more things to screw up. I vote to have City Hall run by Ottawa. (Heck, I'd vote to have City Hall run by the Kremlin, or, for that matter, the student's council at any local school. Anyone but the yahoos who currently "work" there.)
