UPDATE: Fatal collision on EB QEW

Six people hurt in chain-reaction crash

One person is dead and six people are in hospital after a violent, chain reaction crash on the eastbound QEW approaching Dixie Rd.

It started at around 7:20 am Sunday when an SUV broke down in the right lane. An Ministry of Transportation truck was dispatched to the scene to warn drivers of the hazard and a tow truck called to take the SUV away.

The tow truck was in front of the SUV, the MTO truck behind it when a white van crashed into the MTO truck.  The impact ripped the passenger side of the van open and the two people inside were thrown onto the pavement. The van went on to hit a car, which in turn hit the broken down SUV, pushing it into the to truck.

A 30-year-old man who had been in the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The other person was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Three people in the car plus the drivers of the stalled SUV and the MTO truck were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.  The tow truck driver wasn't hurt.

The crash, investigation and cleanup snarled traffic on the QEW for several hours.
