The tax filing deadline has arrived
May 5 was the deadline set by the Canada Revenue Agency after the heartbleed bug temporarily disabled their website

If you've been putting it off, you might want to file your 2013 tax return today.

After the Heartbleed Bug infiltrated the Canada Revenue Agency website, the government shut it down for 5 days and extended the tax deadline until Monday, May 5.

Of course, you'll only be penalized if you owe the government money.

If that applies to you, you'll be charged 5 percent on your balance, plus 1 percent extra for each month that your return is late, up until 12 months. If you haven't filed your 2012, 2011 or 2010 tax return, those penalties double.

However, if you're waiting on a child tax benefit or a GST cheque, you won't receive those until you file your tax return, even if you don't owe the government any money.
