Charges have been laid after a "horrific," fatal crash over the weekend.

At about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, police say a white van slammed into the back of a stationary Ministry of Transportation truck that had been blocking a disabled vehicle in the right lane.

This happened in the eastbound lanes of the QEW near Dixie Rd.

Half of the van had exploded on impact, ejecting both the driver and passenger.

"It was unbelievable," says OPP Sgt Kerry Schmidt. "All the contents from the van were scattered across all lanes of traffic.

"It was horrific."

30-year-old Dmytro Garanin, the passenger of the van, was killed.

25-year-old Bohdan Igorovyc Doroshyn, the driver, suffered life-threatening injuries. Police say he was arrested in hospital and charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

Three other vehicles became involved in the accident and two other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
