There’s more bad news for the CEO of the Sony Centre. On Wednesday additional information contained in an audit of the centre was released to City Council.
According to the report, the Sony Centre board approved a payment of $572, 000 to CEO Dan Brambilla in order to retain him as a consultant on a new facility back in 2002. The deal was made through Brambilla’s own company Stage by Stage Holdings. That project was eventually scrapped and a response from “Sony Centre Management” which was presented to City Council, it states that the hiring “saved the Centre significant sums of money” because they did not have to pay Brambilla any benefits.
The audit also found that Dan Brambilla’s company was paid $7,910 for the rights to promote his wedding to his wife back in 2010. According to the response from management of the Sony Centre they felt the arrangement was “reasonable” given Brambilla’s contract to promote the Centre as a place for weddings, even referring to Brambilla’s wedding as a “beta test”.
Brambilla expensed thousands of dollars in airfare and event tickets for his wife while he was on business trips and even expensed fundraising events to solicit support from the Provincial and Federal governments.
50% of the food and beverage purchased by CEO Dan Brambilla at the Sony Centre was also expensed, but the memo from management states that he was conducting “quality control testing”.
This latest information comes after a report released by the Auditor General showed that the redevelopment of the Sony Centre had ballooned to $40-million under the previous board of directors. Citizen members of the board denounced the call to have city staff and councillors take control of the board saying the report covered transactions made between 2008 and 2011, before the current board members were appointed.
Last week the eight civilian members of the board resigned.
