GM recalls over 500,000 Camaros over ignition switch problems

Cars built in Oshawa

General Motors is recalling more cars for problems with ignition switches.

GM is recalling nearly 512,000 Chevrolet Camaro muscle cars from the 2010 to 2014 model years, built in Canada at a GM assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont.

The automaker says 17,736 of the Camaros are in Canada. A driver's knee can bump the key and knock the switch out of the "run'' position, causing an engine stall.

That knocks out power steering and brakes and could cause drivers to lose control.

GM says it knows of three crashes and four minor injuries from the problem.

GM says the Camaro switches met its specifications, unlike the switches at the centre of a recall of 2.6 million small cars. That problem has caused more than 50 crashes and at least 13 deaths.

The Camaro key is concealed in the Fob like a switchblade. GM will replace it with a straight design.

How this company remains in business baffles me. They come up with yet another new car model every year so the old classic names disappear, and even some new ones disappear. Cavaliers became Cobalts and now Cruze. Cobalts look like 1990's Neons. Impala's have been Bel Air's since 2000, if it doesn't have 6 tail lights it will never be an Impala. They seem to have recalls every week, and they didn't learn from bailout to reduce their product line. Sure Camaro is retro, and Corvette will always sell, but that has never meant they were good. Until they smarten up and make a real Impala with 6 tail lights and a retro 1967 look, they will not be worth buying.

If I worked at GM, I would find a way to ask the customer if they work at Wal Mart or voted anything but Liberal yesterday; either way, I'd just tell them I'd fixed it and send them home in a doomed car, lol
