Mammoliti calls Parkdale "Pedophile District"

speaking out against all-ages dance parties at Exhibition Grounds

A Toronto city councillor is drawing ire from a neighbourhood within the city.

Giorgio Mammoliti called Parkdale a "pedophile district" after speaking out against public dance parties set for the exhibition grounds.

The councillor was against allowing 'electronic dance parties' or 'raves' at the Ex, but council decided to allow the all-age parties after debating whether it was better if these parties were held on private property.

Councillor Gord Perks was instrumental in convincing council to reverse their decision in May.

Monday, Councillor Mammoliti quoted un-sourced statistics to prove his statement. "There should be great concern over the fact that the neighbouring Parkdale area is home to one of the highest concentrations of registered sex offenders, including pedophiles, living in the City of Toronto."

Mammoliti's concerns were voiced in a statement he issued ahead of public consultations on public electronic dance parties at Exhibition Place.

"Why are you advocating for children and adults to be partying together right next to your ward which has one of the largest concentrations of registered sex offenders in the city?" Mammoliti said in the release.

The local councillor, Gord Perks, called Mammoliti's statement irresponsible, calling it a slur against the neighbourhood.

Read Perks' statement below:

You may have heard the awful slur one of my colleagues has made against our wonderful neighbourhood. I want to say how saddened I am that Parkdale has been attacked this way.

As we all know Parkdale is the kind of community everyone in Toronto admires. We are economically, socially, and culturally diverse. We accept and welcome and love each other. If the rest of Toronto were more like Parkdale, Toronto would be an even better place to live.

Many of my colleagues have already contacted me to see how they can help stand up for our great neighbourhood. You may be hearing from some of them in the media. Rest assured this attack comes from one irresponsible voice.

Here’s a suggestion for finding a silver lining: I am inviting everyone to send the reason they love Parkdale to I will be posting your words on

He also thinks that Mickey Mouse owns Disney World, Elvis will be playing at the Horseshoe Tavern this Friday, and the Easter Bunny brigs him chocolates every year. Why would anyone care what this guy says? He has nothing intelligent to say and he loves media attention. He's like Kim Kardashian, only not as attractive, or nearly as smart.

I'm pretty sure its the wards with city councilors that have a lot of Ms in their names, where people are most at risk.

Then again, we could seek out actual facts before letting small minds run amuck. Are there documented risks we should be concerned about? Where are the risks? How can risks be minimized? Having city councilors able to grasp this principle would help Toronto the most.

The risk posed by small minds is a terrible burden on our city. If anything, Coun. Mammolitti's comments draw attention tot he fact that we need to pay more for a better class of politicians. Toronto can't afford to lowball it anymore.

Mammo is crazy! He just gets negative attention which is okay because it is Media attention. Has he provided proof that he was being spied on and what about building the World's largest flag pole?

Statistically, according to the Ontario Sex Offender registry, he is quite correct. Parkdale has the second highest concentration of registered sex offenders in the GTA next to downtown Toronto.

All you fools who are against Mammoliti should be ashamed of yourselves. Whenever the truth is spoken anymore, some idiots hide behind their political correctness. (ineptness)

Those 2 words have destroyed my country.

@Mark7 He does have a point...registered sex offenders and the truly crazy with mental health issues need to live in Parkdale because they're outpatients at CAMH and need to be close to get their meds and treatment. Sadly a lot of property owners have converted the houses there into multi-room rooming houses, sometimes having 5 nuts living in one room but still charging top rents. Because the rents are subsidized the landlords make a fortune.

Who's to blame? Mike Harris and his Conservative government...he closed the in-patient hospital beds, fired the nurses and caregivers, and forced the patients into out-patient status...many still live on the streets, sleeping on exhaust grates around Old City Hall. Before Harris they were called patients, now they're called homeless.

If you want to see what Harris did to these most vulnerable people, hang around CAMH during the week and watch these poor people waiting for their appointments, corner of Queen W. and Lansdowne or Shaw is a good place to watch their agony.

@HP My sister suffers from chronic bi-polar disorder so I know CAMH extremely well. The run around she gets every time she needs to be admitted for 24 hour observation is horrendous. Agreed on Mike Harris. You seem to be one of the good people who care about those who suffer from a mental affliction. I tip my hat to you HP for this post.
