A Toronto city councillor is drawing ire from a neighbourhood within the city.
Giorgio Mammoliti called Parkdale a "pedophile district" after speaking out against public dance parties set for the exhibition grounds.
The councillor was against allowing 'electronic dance parties' or 'raves' at the Ex, but council decided to allow the all-age parties after debating whether it was better if these parties were held on private property.
Councillor Gord Perks was instrumental in convincing council to reverse their decision in May.
Monday, Councillor Mammoliti quoted un-sourced statistics to prove his statement. "There should be great concern over the fact that the neighbouring Parkdale area is home to one of the highest concentrations of registered sex offenders, including pedophiles, living in the City of Toronto."
Mammoliti's concerns were voiced in a statement he issued ahead of public consultations on public electronic dance parties at Exhibition Place.
"Why are you advocating for children and adults to be partying together right next to your ward which has one of the largest concentrations of registered sex offenders in the city?" Mammoliti said in the release.
The local councillor, Gord Perks, called Mammoliti's statement irresponsible, calling it a slur against the neighbourhood.
Read Perks' statement below:
You may have heard the awful slur one of my colleagues has made against our wonderful neighbourhood. I want to say how saddened I am that Parkdale has been attacked this way.
As we all know Parkdale is the kind of community everyone in Toronto admires. We are economically, socially, and culturally diverse. We accept and welcome and love each other. If the rest of Toronto were more like Parkdale, Toronto would be an even better place to live.
Many of my colleagues have already contacted me to see how they can help stand up for our great neighbourhood. You may be hearing from some of them in the media. Rest assured this attack comes from one irresponsible voice.
Here’s a suggestion for finding a silver lining: I am inviting everyone to send the reason they love Parkdale to email@example.com I will be posting your words on www.gordperks.ca
