Police in Markham are searching for a fugitive who eluded capture in a high risk take down on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers now say the man is believed to be armed with a handgun and is described as a black man, dressed in a dark blue shirt and blue jeans.

There's a heavy police presence around Major Mac and Woodbine, including the K9 unit, a police helicopter and multiple cruisers.

Constable Andy Pattenden says it all started around 1:45, when officer were conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle. Three people in that vehicle were taken into custody without incident while the fourth man ran off.

Pattenden couldn't say if he posed a threat to the community or what the original arrest was for, only that there is an 'active search' in the community.

Businesses are asked to operate as normal and residents are being told to carry on with their days, but avoid interfering in police operations.
