MPPs sworn in; Hudak absent
Tories alerted in the morning that Hudak wouldn't be there
4 0

As MPPs were called out one by one before they took a mass oath of office at Queen's Park, one name was strangely absent: Tim Hudak.

While the now-former Progressive Conservative leader resigned from that post, he vowed to stay on as MPP for Niagara West - Glanbrook.

PC MPP Gila Martow also wasn't at the legislature. The timing of the recount in her riding of Thornhill forced the party to submit her name too late for her to take part in for the swearing in ceremony.

Party members were notified in the morning that Hudak wouldn't show up according to PC MPP Lisa MacLeod.

She says she doesn't know the reason why he wasn't there. But she says given the election results the party is giving him some space.

PC MPP Monte McNaughton believes there will be a transition for Hudak to come back.

Lt-Gov David Onley read the Oath of Office for the majority of MPPs today. Astronaut Chris Hadfield was also on hand to lead MPPs as they sang O Canada.

I have to admit that quote has me scratching my head a bit. All this happened almost immediately after the election... at least two weeks ago.

Are they trying to say that it takes over two weeks to organize things so one person can stand up at the same time as dozens of others to just repeat an oath?

I detect the distinct odour of bureaucratic obtuseness, here.

@Angry Bill I may be wrong, but I think the recount was only finished towards the end of last week.

Still, you kind-of knew what the result was going to be, couldn't they have had the memo typed up?

Possible reasons for Hudak's absence from the swearing-in ceremony:

    > He was still campaigning for the federal Tory candidate in Trinity-Spadina

    > He was with Doug Ford planning his political comeback

    > He was afraid of being seen on video having the door hit him in the butt

    > He was helping Gila Martow prepare her concession speech in Thronhill

    > He was in Belleville trying to patch things up with MPP Todd Smith

    > He was with Red Green trying to score enough duct tape to repair the PC Party

    > He was being fitted for his new Walmart greeter's shirt

    > He forgot to buy a road map in order to find his way back to Queen's Park

    > His watch stopped
