Tory leads in latest poll

Rob Ford sitting in third place with 22%

Rob Ford is falling behind and John Tory is the benefactor, according to the latest poll by Nanos Research.

The poll conducted last week after Canada Day, shows John Tory leading with 39% of decided voters, Olivia Chow with nearl 33% and Rob Ford falling to 22%.

It was commissioned by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association.

Chairman Nik Nanos says while there is a long way to go until October 27th, it does appear that this campaign is becoming a two-horse race.

He says Ford didn't get a boost from coming back from re-hab, and needs to change his focus to what he will do for the residents of Toronto.

Folks, we all need to get our heads in the game and back John Tory, because Toronto absolutely, positively CANNOT afford another tax-and-spend fruitcake like Olivia Chow. The less we split the sensible vote, the better.

    John Tory for Mayor!

@Larry Rob Ford and his brother Doug are SELFISH, EGOTISTICAL, MORONS.
Ford cares not about Toronto. He is into promoting his own vile interests.
He is splitting the vote by staying on way too long when he doesn't deserve to be there one more day.

Kick Ford out. Tell him to get out and let a real leader John Tory be our mayor!

@Larry Tax and spend...... How exactly do you think Tory plans on paying for the bloor subway extension? Get ready to pay the Scarborough subway tax!

John Tory does not have the chops to be mayor. The city council will smack him relentlessly. Wants to please everyone. The man is a weakling and already a 3 time lower.

@DMCP John Tory is a 6 on the political spectrum (0=far left, 10=far right). Rob Ford is an 8, Olivia Chow is a 3 and Council is mostly 3 to 5.
With Chow, City Hall will run as a 3,
With Ford, Council will shut him out and City Hall will run as a 3 or 4.
With Tory, City Hall will run as a 5.5.

Tory will be pushed to some degree, but he is still the best chance Toronto has.

I'm not sure I believe any polls. but I really like John. sensible smart articulate balanced. maybe a little to preppy for a lot of ethnic downtown voters. I like Chow also.
She attracts a lot of downtown ethnic votes. She has a lot of experience. She knows the city and is well respected by many.
    I'm good with either

@Art Art; That is just weird. Two entirely different people with different values and different philosophies. How can you conclude you're good with either. Make up your mind which side of the fence you're on.

@Art I dont understand why the poll was commissioned by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association - what re the business plan behind this?

Stock up more Mars bar if Rob Ford wins

Diet coke if Olivia Chow wins and

      Red Bull if Jt wins?

Poll is always wrong.. recent poll has the Liberal win a minority but hey it was a majority.. it also showed PC might win a minority but they were
      deep six..

      This poll showed JT jumped from 22 to 39%, why the sudden increase;
to me doesnt add up, Olivia Chow's number is stable.. so watch out for her..

Tory won't be any better than Chow. He WILL raise taxes. He WILL let the left leaning council run the city. He WILL NOT stand up to Premier Mommy. When everything is said and done he will become know as "Tory the Tax Bringer".

@Jim You're very wrong and time will prove it so.

I think he will win, and thank god for that. He will be tough, regardless of these baseless comments I've been reading. Rob will fall off the wagon and get behind Tory and he will then be a shoe-in.

I think it's good the pollees have finally stopped putting him third. If only Rob's numbers would drop below 20% then we could be comfortable against a vote-split which would hand Chow the mayoralty.

I'm still waiting for a battle in my city, as we only have Danny DeVito so far, Mauricio has yet to commit another term.

    I love it!

@Rob Ford's Nose Candy What Rob Ford is doing to the city's reputation, Olivia Chow would do to our finances. Vague ideals and a warm fuzzy feeling will only take you so far, before debt collectors start showing up.

Anyone with a stats credit can tell you it takes over 1,000 people to create a reliable poll predicition, 19 times out of 20 with a 304% variance. This poll is invalid. Shame on the pollster.

I hope newstalk is able to leave this posting up.

      @frank Thank you....
This is exactly what I've been saying when I heard this too. Its only 600 people out of a city of over a million people....and this is being touted as legit?
Are we so desperate to see a poll where Rob Ford doesn't have strong numbers, that we are reducing ourselves to this?

Mind you, if Tory had a legitimate poll, with strong numbers based on a significant portion of the population polling, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But please stop reporting that there is a poll that shows Tory in the lead, based on the opinions of ONLY 600 people.

As you've said FRANK- shame on the pollster. And additionally, shame on the media for touting this as news without giving the proper context- or enlightening people of the fine print.

Tory may be a bit wishy washy but he is clearly Toronto's only option. Ford lost his chance and Chow Chow would be a leftist joke from hell. Seriously, who can take Chow Chow seriously anyways.
