Family confirms to Newstalk 1010 that 24 year-old Andrei Anghel of Ajax died on Malaysia Airlines flight MH 17

The Canadian killed aboard the Malaysia Airlines flight brought down over eastern Ukraine Thursday was a 24 year-old man from the GTA.

Newstalk 1010 has confirmed that 24 year-old Andrei Anghel grew up in Ajax and was in medical school in Romania. His father Sorin Anghel says Andrei was heading to Bali for a vacation.

"He was an amazing person and he will be greatly missed by everyone that he knew," his sister Alexandra tells Newstalk 1010 who found out about her brother's death at work Thursday and got on a red-eye from Edmonton to be with her parents. "My little brother is gone."

"(Thursday) the police came here and gave us the official notice," Sorin tells Newstalk 1010 and says his son was a very kind, outgoing man who liked meeting other people.

The airline has said at least one Canadian was among the 298 people killed after a surface-to-air missile brought down the Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight Thursday over Ukraine.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has issued a statement expressing shock and sadness about the destruction of the plane and said Canada is willing to assist authorities in determining the cause of the crash.
