SIU invokes mandate after Newmarket shooting

A man was seriously injured during an interaction with police officers on Davis Drive

The Special Investigations Unit has been called in following a police-involved shooting early Tuesday in Newmarket, Ont.

The SIU says just after midnight, York Region police officers responded to a 911 call about shots being fired near an apartment building on Davis Drive (near Calgain Road and Lorne Avenue).

Officers were confronted by a man armed with a handgun, who advanced toward them, prompting the officers to fire their weapons.

The unidentified man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. No police officers were injured during the incident.

The SIU investigates all reports where there is death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving police officers.
