Several tank shells slammed into a crowded U.N. school used as shelter for refugees in the Gaza war early on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and wounding 90, a Palestinian health official and a U.N. official said.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment.

The strike hit the U.N. school in the Jebaliya refugee camp where hundreds of Palestinians had sought shelter from the intense fighting and Israeli tank fire, said Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the U.N. aid agency UNRWA, which has opened its schools to those displaced by the fighting.

Starting at around 4:30, several tank shells hit the school compound, a few minutes apart, said the school principal, Fayez Abu Dayeh. He said shells hit two classrooms and a bathroom. In one of the classrooms, the front wall was blown out, leaving debris and bloodied clothing. Another strike tore a large round hole into the ceiling of a second floor class-room.

Ashraf al-Kidra, a Palestinian health official, said at least 15 people were killed and about 90 wounded.

The deadly strike came a day after Israel unleashed its heaviest air and artillery assault in the bloodiest day of the three-week Gaza war, destroying key symbols of Hamas control, shutting down the territory's only power plant and leaving at least 128 Palestinians dead.

Israel must be brought in front of the international criminal court. I blame the Americans also. they have blood on their hands for letting this carnage continue. they can put an immediate stop to this but choose not to. They're sanctioning Russia without due process but do nothing here about slapping hard sanctions on Israel for murder. Their weapons and money go to these people. It's to Israel advantage to talk tunnels and not talk the real root causes of occupation or illegal settlement building on occupied lands as stated by international law. that continues and people suffer.

@Mike You must be referring to a kangaroo court.
Are you aware Hamas has been pushing for the complete destruction of Israel and an Islamist state worldwide?
Are you aware Hamas uses its civilians to protect its armaments vs Israel using its armaments to protect its citizens?
Are you aware Israel moved out of Gaza (and removed ALL settlements) in 2005 in order for to promote peace yet Hamas used this to stockpile weapons and fire thousands of rockets into Israel since then?
Are you aware Hamas intentionally targets Israeli citizens?
Nothing is ever one-sided of course but please take the trouble to educate yourself and not be brainwashed.

@Mike Are you aware that throughout the history of mankind that the Palestinians have never held ownership of said "occupied lands"? Educate yourself on the TRUTH and feel no remorse for these Palestinian murderers.

It is the Palestinians who should be brought up on war crimes. The fact that they want the complete destruction of Israel (never will happen as protected by Yahweh), gives them title to these crimes.

@Mark7 Palestinians have been victimized by their leaders, who are the real enemy. They're surrounded by extremely wealthy arab nations who also used them to hide their own dictatorships. The UN has also been responsible by creating an entire industry around Palestinian refugees and Israel hasn't been entirely without fault. Additionally, most of the media, the left, and many countries have vilified Israel for daring to exist.

These groups have contributed tremendously to the sad state Gaza is in today. The West Bank has been relatively peaceful for many years and their population has been thriving.

Too bad the Palestinians followed those groups rather than follow the Israel model of incredible growth, innovation, etc. to make themselves world leaders in many industries.

Neither Israel nor the Palestinians are going away and the faster Hamas disappears or follows Fatah's philosophy the faster peace may develop.

@Mike If Hamas REALLY cared about the plight of their people, they would stop firing rockets immediately, and call for a cease fire.

It is increasingly disturbing that people like yourself are falling for the propaganda of the "Israeli bullies picking on the poor Palestinians"....

Israel's response to the threat of their national security has been thus far remarkably measured. And they have shown restraint. Believe me, if the tables were turned, the Palestinians would blow Israel off the face of the planet.

Do not fall for the hype. Israel is doing all it can to protect itself.
Whereas Hamas is doing all it can, to use its citizens, to protect themselves.

      ---------------------------------------------
If the Hamas somehow rocket-fired America with even one rocket, do you honestly think that they would just stand by and say, "Oh, the poor Palestinians are in plight". NO! There would be boots on the ground in a nanosecond. Israel has has to endure countless enemy fire (thousands of artillery shelling), and even now, they are still willing to let humanitarian aid for the Palestinians by calling a temporary cease-fire from time to time.
