SIU probing death of Veld Fest concertgoer

Man in medical distress was handcuffed

Ontario's police watchdog is looking into the death of a Toronto concertgoer while he was being rushed to hospital.

It started at Veld Fest, an electronic music festival at Downsview Park Saturday and Sunday.

The Special Investigations Unit says a Toronto police officer on duty at the park saw two people carrying a man who looked to be in some sort of medical distress and called EMS for help.  While paramedics were treating the 22-year-old man, he became violent and was handcuffed.

The cuffs were eventually taken off and the man was treated by EMS staff on the way to hospital, but died before they arrived.

The SIU steps in to investigate interactions between the police and public that involve a death, serious injury, or allegation of sexual assault. The unit has assigned a team of seven investigators to handle the case.
