Passengers getting on and off streetcar major cause of delays
Service delays on King St. as long as 15 minutes
4 0

The next time you are waiting a long time for a streetcar on King Street blame it on other riders.

A new city staff report, looking at efficiency on that line, shows most of the delays are because passengers are taking so long to get on and off.

The study also shows that delays on the 504 line can end up lasting anywhere from 4-15 minutes.

Councillor and public works chair Denzil Minnan-Wong says they orginially thought cars were solely to blame.

Time spent waiting for traffic control signals to change so traffic in front of the streetcar can clear and traffic congestion were other causes of delay.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross says the current streetcar design contributes to the delays because people have to board at the front doors, but the new ones have four doors for passengers to use.

However, those streetcars aren't expected to be in use on King street until 2017.

@KevinR_2 LOOK...it's quite simple...install the Presto Card system in all TTC vehicles...it will move people faster and can be used at doors...stop the silly politicking...just do it!

I bet that people getting on and off street cars are a source of general traffic delays as well in the downtown core.

Simple solution. Ban everything but TTC, Bikes and Motorcycles from King street between 7 and 9 am, then from 4-7 pm.

Also - why delay the new streetcars from King street? Understand they will launch on Spadina. Spadina is not the traffic issue that King is, and the streetcars there are separated from the street - so what value would there be putting them there to launch?

Launch the new steetcars on King Street now~!
