UPDATE: Police chief serves Doug Ford with defamation notice

Regarding accusations Doug Ford made about Chief Blair leaking information about an impending subpoena for Mayor Rob Ford

Police chief Bill Blair has served Councillor Doug Ford with a defamation notice in the wake of comments he made regarding an impending subpoena for Mayor Rob Ford.

Councillor Ford was served Monday evening by Chief Bill Blair's lawyers.

Ford accused the chief of leaking news that the mayor was to be subpoenaed in the extortion case involving former friend Alessandro Lisi. The councillor said the news was leaked as "payback."

The chief is asking for a retraction of the comments and a public apology.

Legal analyst Ed Prutschi tells Newstalk 1010's Jerry Agar that if councillor Ford does that, the case will likely never end up in court.

Blair's spokesperson says that the chief, not taxpayers, is personally paying for the legal action.

Here goes the charade. Lawyers will make lots of money, taxpayers on the hook for it all. Hasn't Blair scammed us enough with getting a year's salary because his contract wasn't renewed? Everyone approving that waste of taxpayers money should be fired from the board and prevented from ever being responsible for taxpayers money again.

@AbbyW "Hasn't Blair scammed us enough with getting a year's salary because his contract wasn't renewed?"

Nope. Common law would give him about one month's pay for every year of service. Blair has been with the Toronto Police Service for 35 years so this provision in his contract protects taxpayers from having to pay almost three years salary instead.

@MarkFromEtobicoke Read up on employment law. He had a defined contract term, not a regular employment contract so severance doesn't apply.

@AbbyW I have and it does apply in term contracts of this sort.

Severance is what severance is. Those who have never held a job for a very long time, would not know what those who do, are entitled to. This is not a Municipal or any government thing - it applies to any and all employees.

Chief, go for it. Sue him well. It is time for these ford brothers to know that there are consequences for their actions. Too many times though their reign they have said outlandish things they knew were lies, purported as truth, then cat called those who disagreed and stated the TRUTH. This is largely how they divide the city into Ford Nation and the rest. Trouble is, Ford Nation believes the lies and they too carry it as truth. The time of deceit, lies and cat calling municipal employees by this family is over.

Time to pay the piper Dougie.

@AbbyW Have you read his contract?

Just because you speculate he had a finite term does not necessarily preclude him to a severance/termination/non-renewal payment.

When informed that it was a defamation suit, Doug went out to buy boots and a hat to go with it, saying, "I didn't even know I was on fire!"

Well done, Mr. Blair. Don't let him settle out of court.
