Close to 6,000 homes were in the dark Tuesday and Wednesday morning after a power outage in portions of the city's East York, Upper Beach and The Beach neighbourhoods.

The area affected was bordered in the north from Danforth south to Queen and Main Street in the west east to Lutrell Ave, which is halfway to Victoria Park Avenue.

Toronto Hydro say a contractor accidentally severed a power line during work around noon on Tuesday.

Crews were on scene all day and throughout the night. Power was restored just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
