WATCH: Fords stand by volunteer after fight at campaign office

Volunteer charged in scuffle with ''citizen journalist'' in Rob Ford mask

The Ford brothers are standing behind a volunteer after he was criminally charged in a scuffle at Scarborough campaign office.

Self-described citizen journalist Paul Benoit showed up to the office near Lawrence Ave W and Warden Ave Wednesday afternoon. Wearing a rubber Rob Ford mask and his camera rolling, Benoit walked in at around 3:30 pm.

"I just wanted to go into the campaign office and say hello, just as a joke, to see what the reaction would be," Benoit told Moore in the Morning. " I was not expecting it to turn violent."

Once inside, Benoit's footage shows a man with a "Rob Ford Mayor" button pinned to his T-shirt walking steadily toward him. Off camera, a voice says "Get outta here, I'm calling the cops. You're not allowed in here." Benoit says he was pushed on his way out door.

As the men move outside the campaign office, a voice is heard saying "put that away" and a man appears to kick the camera.

Benoit feels the footage vindicates him and says it was after viewing the footage that police laid charges.

"The camera doesn't lie. The video is conclusive."

Police say not only was Benoit's camera knocked away from him, but he was punched in the face and the fight continued until other people intervened. Benoit was left with a black eye.  Doug Ford said Wednesday a volunteer had suffered a bump to the head.

Police say Benoit's opponent took off with his microphone.

William Byers is charged with assault, mischief and theft.

Doug Ford is promising to release his own footage of what he told CP24 was a "pre-meditated attack" on the Ford campaign that involves Benoit "kicking a 60-year-old man, jumping on his back."

"I really gotta question how this guy's even walking on the street right now," said Doug Ford. "This guy is a few fries short of a Happy Meal, in my opinion."

Doug Ford pointed to Benoit's YouTube channel that includes videos of his infant son and straight to camera rants about the mayor.  Benoit, who lives in Oakville, calls his brand of journalism "Hunter S. Thompson-esque".

Rob Ford told reporters Thursday he supports his campaign workers, but deferred questions to his lawyer, Dennis Morris, who is representing Byers. Doug Ford said not only did he support Byers, but that "he did the right thing."

    Citizen Journalist,

I am not a Rob Ford supporter, but I would like to see him re-elected to continue the circus and I would like to see the crazy train continue!

Really, you put on a mask and enter the campaign office. I would expect to be escorted out.

If you act like an idiot, you suffer the consequences! This clearly demonstrates the problem with todays laws. A good old punch in the kisser in the old days dealt with idiots.

It is too bad, the old geezer did not kick you in the nuts where it would do some good! This would prevent populating your stupidity into the world through procreation activities!

Hope they find something to charge this idiot "citizen journalist" with. All the people that support this guy are equally idiotic.

doesn't matter if the "citizen journalist" is in the wrong.. still Rob Ford's fault..

I hope Rob Ford wins again and let STuG stew for another 4 years.. lol

The litmus test I tend to use is, how would I react? Conclusion, I would not act like the Rob Ford thugs did. I would have laughed, said "Good joke, buddy", and that would have been it.

The impression I'm left with is, Ford employs and uses people who have a similar mindset to him, which is understandable. However, if you happen to be a thug and you do that, then this is the sort of response you're going to get in this sort of situation.

I have to say that while I have been ambivalent toward Ford and his antics in the past, putting up with him because he pisses the lefties off, I'm seeing more and more of his dark personality during this election race.

@Angry Bill Sorry, I hit Submit too quick.

Bottom line, that entire altercation turned ugly fast. My point is, it didn't have to.
    2. Karl Burgin posted on 09/04/2014 10:21 AM
@Angry Bill That maybe so....but there's no telling if this is the first incident we know about, or the 50th- and that this may have been the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back".

Remember BILL, there has been a lot of Ford supporters that have been hassled, ridiculed and harassed- of which has been reflected here with the number of trolls and horses-asses that have rolled through.
The most recent incident I could see where a Ford party was crashed, was at Ford fest- where you had all manner of crashers attending, and attempting to create trouble.
Up till now, Ford supporters have taken it in stride, and there surprisingly hasn't been more reactions like this.

The bottom line is this guy deserved it. Even on the radio @ 8:20 with an interview with Mr. Moore this morning, he admitted it- though his defense was paltry at best.

The man was cruisin' for a bruisin'- and I'm not going to lose one wink of sleep because he got a black eye through his cheap Ford mask.
    3. Angry Bill posted on 09/04/2014 11:37 AM
@Karl Burgin Maybe there was more to this situation than what the video showed. But based on just what I saw in the video, the guy wasn't trying to be malicious in any way. It seemed to me that he just thought it would be funny. Now, I might be wrong.. maybe he did have more nefarious motives. But if so, that wasn't evident in this video.

It just seems to me that Ford cannot take a joke. And, by extension, his supporters.

And I'm aware he's been beset by the liberal media and other like minded individuals many times in the past, as you described. So I know you can't accept this one video in a vacuum. You need to look at it in context to everything else Ford has had thrown at him.

But, my comment was based solely on the content of this one video, without considering the shirtless guy or the other attacks on Ford.
    4. Karl Burgin posted on 09/04/2014 11:52 AM
@Angry Bill Mr. Benoit may have been initially trying to be humourous- except the following points speak otherwise to his intentions...

1.> Unless he's been living under a rock for the last few years in Toronto, he should have been aware that this would have been viewed as at the very least, a provocation.
Given the Daniel Dale incident, the CBC on his front lawn, and the Shirtless horde, as a "citizen journalist", he at least should have been knowledgeable of the fact, that those tactics don't usually end with a "laugh and a hoot".

2.>He said it himself this morning, that he wouldn't be giving any of the candidates the same treatment. And he's admitted that he's in the ABF (anyone but Ford camp). You would think that as an upcoming journalist, he should have had the ability to cover his bias a little bit more. He should take his cues from the Toronto Star.
But, through his very own admission, he's already nothing but trouble...

3.>Mark Towhey stated on the round table this morning that candidates political offices are quasi-public establishments. Meaning that while it is open to the public somewhat, it is limited to those involved running the office, volunteers and such. Not every and anyone can just drop in.
Mr. citizen journalist falls under the fact that he didn't have the right to just walk in...

Also, on the round table, it was mentioned that Mr. Benoit has other works of "journalism" where he has been an instigator and a trouble maker. This latest endeavor is no different.

@Karl Burgin If he were smart, he'd go get himself a John Tory mask and walk into Tory's campaign office. I'm sure whatever happens would be funny, but I'm equally certain no one there would kick him in the teeth! At the end of the day, that is the difference.

@Karl Burgin You mean the Daniel Dale incident where a person was in no way encroaching upon a person's private land and a drunk and likely high mayor ford physically threatened him and robbed him of his cell phone? The incident where he later lied about the contents of his security footage and the the words of his neighbour?

      That one?

      I remember THAT one.
    8. Karl Burgin posted on 09/04/2014 03:42 PM
@Alex Oliveira You mean the incident when he screamed like a girl and ran away?
Or the part where it made sense that it could be perceived that he could have been a child predator or intruder, as Ford was at home with his kids at the time....

But if you want other incidents...
-There's the numerous BS complaints to the integrity commissioner
-The complaint from a citizen because Rob Ford was handing out magnets
      -The numerous frivolous civil lawsuits
-The sneaking in bushes and following Ford/family up north to his cottage...
-Some small-time Toronto newspaper (the nae escapes me at the moment) posting Ford's head on a nearly naked man's body on the front cover
-The media seemingly permanently entrenched in front of his office

      Still haven't forgotten about those

I think citizen a-hole got what he deserved, he was clearly trying to agitate and he got the reaction he was looking for. However no excuse for the other guy to hit him, he should have been the bigger man and not stooped to the level of citizen dumbass.
    1. Alex Oliveira posted on 09/04/2014 02:34 PM

@Alex Oliveira If you actually read my comment, you would see that I stated there was no excuse for the guy to hit him. That being said he was clearly trying to agitate and get a reaction, and he got it. No sympathy for him at all.
    3. Ken_S82 posted on 09/04/2014 02:46 PM
@Alex Oliveira Never, but I'm not altogether sympathetic to him. He's getting his 15 min and he either went in looking for trouble or should have known better. Walking into an office where you might run into a bank or politician / candidate's office wearing a mask or disguise isn't a good idea.

Not that i wish to promote this self proclaimed "Journalist", in reality he's a man with a youtube account and a blog that hasn't been updated in a year and a half. That said his youtube account has a couple handful of selfie videos of him ranting unintelligently about Rob Ford outside city hall. Here's a piece of his work.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrNOXB7qr3s&index=12&list=UUaKCqxUjqGBZ3AIRVJxfq3w

Not exactly an up any coming journalist.

He got what he deserved, going into any office wearing a mask or disguise is scary enough. Should he have been punched? Certainly not. He should have been shown the door in short order and given a trespass notice. Am I happy he was....yes!

Ford and Tory are neck-in-neck. Unlike your delusional fantasy where Ford would have fallen by the wayside months ago.

That's the only reason you single me out to pick a fight with. Even though pretty much everyone here agrees with me- and to a point ANGRY BILL.

No doubt you're going to respond to this within seconds of me posting my response. Because you've got nothing to do but sit in front of your computer all day waiting to see if i comment.

Unlike the last forum, where you decided to use all your mental resources to see if you could wear me down, obviously that hasn't worked. It will be interested to see what you've got up your sleeve this time- if anything at all. But unlike you, I have a life and responsibilities to tend to- so I will not be entertaining your company anytime soon like last time.

Post your delusional drivel all you want BS Provider- but no one will listen. And neither will your wishes come true.

@Karl Burgin RE: "Ford and Tory are neck-in-neck. "
Yup ... delusional is the operative word for you here.
A 14 point spread is hardly "neck and neck".

The ONLY polling group that pretends it's a close race is Forum Research... and they're the crack pollsters who predicted a Conservative majority provincially.

Nanos, at a 14 point spread, is closer to the truth.
Between now and October 27th, the gap will certainly remain and likely even widen more..

Your hero will be a poor third, as I've been saying for almost 3 months now. BTW, I'm the guy who ,predicted the provincial election results to the exact number for each Party a full 12 days before the vote..

You would do well to watch and learn from me, troll.
It's never too late to better yourself.

Hitler had Brown Shirts, Rob Ford has volunteers.

I guess "violence is the only way to handle people" must be the Ford mantra, otherwise the Fords would be falling all over themselves, apologize for their volunteer's assault on the guy, who was already outside of the office and offered no resistance when he was assaulted.

So, if you are indeed an intolerant and violent bully, come join Ford Nation.

Just like the Brown Shirts, Disgraceful.

And Karl - you do not live in this city. You are the troll. You and Ford Notion think its violent ways will earn them more votes and are unapologetic for the volunteer's actions, right? What does that say about the volunteer, you and indeed Ford Notion?

Idiots support kick first and ask questions later. What an irate bully the volunteer is.

Is that the kind of people our mayor wants at his side. Well in term one he interoduced us to his pals that included gangsters, crack dealers and those who carry guns? (Yes, that makes the entitled millionaire, a man of the people, right? Not my people!)

Not surprised at all. Neither is anyone.

How could you support violence on a person who offered absolutely no resistance?

Maybe the volunteer has diminished mental capacity? Cause he knew he was being filmed, yet still hit the dude. No, he's just arrogant, and entitled, just like the Fords.

If you came into my place of business and I wanted you to leave, I would not kick you once you were already out the door. That would be wrong.

But in fairness, maybe someone was smoking crack in the back and they didn't want it captured on camera? But the dude was already outside????

    Typical Ford Notion.

Thanks for responding Ken and Karl. Typical of Ford Nation, attack one point with a ridiculous reply and ignore the post's true content.

From your reply,I note with great interest you do not deny that bullying runs at the core of Fraud Notion, and you have no problem with it (nor the blatant lies, claims of accomplishments and impossible $ funding that Ford has put forward as truth).

Keep drinking the Kool-Aid guys. It looks real good on you.

Per the Troll comment - If Rick Mercer were to do what this Citizen Journalist did (he still lives in Halifax) are you saying it would be OK to punch him in the face on camera? Also , the out-of-town citizen journalist made no negative statements or did anything at all to warrant the beating, yet you defend it and by your actions support it. Very classy. er.. violent and arrogant. Nice.

Bill, you are not a citizen journalist, rather a Troll on this board propping up a Mayor of a city you do not live in, pay taxes towards, or do anything other than buy stuff in, maybe... That's the difference. Own it.

So guys, how do those Brown Shirts fit? Are they cotton or poly-fiber?

I meant to address that portion to Karl.

I know you (Bill) are very sane and no doubt we share similar opinions. Again, sorry Bill, Karl is indeed the Fraud Notion Troll on this board.

I used Rick Mercer as an example cause he is Canadian and does satirical ambush video interviews like this dude had tried at Ford's Scarborough campaign office.

But, I'd bet that volunteer would have punched Joan....somewhere else...no doubt. RIP Joan. Crazy Lady!
