The Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee announced the Toronto route for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, which arrives in Toronto on December 17. Approximately 1,000 torchbearers will carry the Torch for 48 kilometres through city streets over a two-day period.
The Olympic Torch Relay will enter Toronto at Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue at 1:52 p.m. and make its way to downtown Toronto. The relay will travel south along Yonge Street, along Highway 401, stopping at Albert Campbell Square at the Scarborough Civic Centre at about 3 p.m. The City will offer entertainment and interactive sporting activities for Torontonians of all ages at the civic centre beginning at 1 p.m.
The relay will then travel along Ellesmere Road/York Mills Road before making its way back onto Yonge Street and will travel south to College Street, where the Olympic Flame will be carried by a torchbearer on a westbound College streetcar. From there, it will travel to SickKids Hospital, return to Yonge Street and head south to Queen Street West, and onto Nathan Phillips Square for the Community Celebration, arriving at the square at 7 p.m.
The Community Celebration at Nathan Phillips Square, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m., will showcase performances by local, national and international artists, for all age groups. Toronto's Final Torchbearer,
Olympic medal winner Vicky Sunohara, will light the cauldron. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display by a local and internationally acclaimed pyrotechnics company.
On December 18, the Olympic Torch Relay will start at 6 a.m. at Queen's Park. It will travel south along University Avenue to Front Street West, then along Blue Jays Way and Bremnar Boulevard, passing the Rogers Centre and CN Tower and then back to Front Street East on its way to the Distillery District. From there it will travel north to Regent Park and then along Danforth Avenue. It will then travel to the East York Town Centre and along Don Mills Road, where it heads out of city via the Don Valley Parkway.
The last day of the route in Toronto will be December 19. On that day, the Olympic Flame will travel along Eglinton Avenue through Centennial Park and the Etobicoke Olympium before it heads to Mississauga and continues its journey across the country.
